About

Dr. Matthew LoPresti is Program Chair for Asian Studies and Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Hawaii Pacific University. He specializes in South Asian and East-West Comparative Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Metaphysics. His work is informed by the premise that if one is to succeed in navigating contemporary global ideologies, one ought to develop an understanding of the religio-philosophical presuppositions that distinguish these traditions. This “understanding without embracing” is vital to our ability to maintain a healthy pluralistic society that respects and harmonizes the variety of traditions that constitute our world today.
In India he taught American students as Lecturer of Buddhist Philosophy and Field Research Advisor for the Antioch Buddhist Studies Program in Bodh Gaya and studied Sanskrit as a Language Fellow for the American Institute of Indian Studies at Deccan College in Pune. His most recent research has worked towards theorizing process metaphysical narratives in which a variety of different religious traditions can be simultaneously authentic. In 2006 he was awarded a Golden Apple Award for Distinguished Teaching at Hawaii Pacific University.
